7 Essential Travel Vaccinations in Germany | Emden Medical Center

travel vaccinations in Germany

Getting your travel vaccinations in Germany sorted before a trip abroad is something most people leave too late. By the time you are packing your bags some of the most important vaccines have already run out of time to work properly. Some need to be given weeks in advance and a few require more than one dose spread over several weeks. At Emden Medical Center we offer travel vaccination consultations for all destinations so you can leave Germany fully protected and with complete peace of mind.

Why Travel Vaccinations in Germany Are Worth Sorting Early

The reason doctors keep saying “come in early” is not to be cautious for the sake of it. Vaccines like hepatitis A, typhoid, and yellow fever need time to build up protection in your body. Some, like rabies, require three doses over at least three weeks. If you walk in two days before your flight there is simply not enough time for many of them to do their job properly.
A good rule of thumb is to book your travel vaccination consultation at least six to eight weeks before you leave. If your trip is coming up sooner than that, come in anyway. There is still plenty we can do and some protection is always better than none.

Which Vaccinations You Might Need Depends on Where You Are Going

There is no single list that applies to every traveller. The vaccinations you need depend on your destination, your planned activities, your age, your health history, and whether you are up to date on your standard German vaccination schedule.
That said, some vaccines come up very frequently for travellers leaving Germany. Hepatitis A is recommended for most destinations in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Typhoid is often recommended alongside it for areas with less reliable food and water safety. Yellow fever is compulsory to enter certain countries in Africa and South America and you will need an official certificate to prove you have had it. Malaria is not a vaccination but a course of preventive tablets, and the right type depends entirely on where exactly you are going.
For travellers going to more remote areas, or anyone planning to work with animals, rabies vaccination is something worth discussing. The same goes for Japanese encephalitis if you are heading into rural parts of Southeast Asia.
The Robert Koch Institut publishes destination specific travel health advice which is a useful starting point, though a proper consultation will always give you a more personalised picture.

What Happens at a Travel Vaccination Consultation at Our Emden Clinic

When you come in we will go through your itinerary and your existing vaccination history together. If you do not have your vaccination booklet (Impfpass) bring whatever records you do have. If you have nothing at all that is fine too we can work from what you tell us and check what is on file.
From there we will recommend what you need, explain what each one is for in plain terms, and administer anything we have in stock on the same day where possible. We will also talk through any non-vaccine precautions like food and water safety, sun exposure, insect repellent, and altitude if relevant to your trip.
You can book your travel consultation through our appointments page or walk in during our opening hours. Monday to Friday we are open from 08:00 to 16:00 and Saturday to Sunday from 08:00 to 12:00.

Do Not Forget Your Standard Vaccinations

One thing many people overlook is whether their routine vaccinations are up to date. Tetanus, diphtheria, polio, and MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) are all part of the standard German vaccination schedule but adults often let them lapse without realising. Travelling abroad is a good moment to check. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has country specific health information worth checking for your destination.
If you are not sure whether you are up to date just mention it when you come in and we will check.

Travelling with Children

Children need travel vaccinations too and the recommendations are often slightly different from adults. Some vaccines are not suitable below a certain age, and children may need doses adjusted for their weight. If you are travelling with kids bring their Impfpass so we can see exactly what they have had and what they still need.

The earlier you come in the more options you have. If your trip is six weeks away or more you are in a comfortable position. If it is sooner, do not put it off any further.
